Write-ahead log (WAL)

SQLite's journaling mode in which committed changes are appended to a separate -wal file before being copied into the main database at a checkpoint.

In WAL mode, SQLite appends changed pages to <database>-wal and leaves the main file untouched until a checkpoint (sqlite.org). For wpndatabase.db this means the newest notifications are often only in wpndatabase.db-wal, and older page images in the WAL can hold deleted rows. Collect both files together.
